It was in the summer of 1989 that I first discovered the work of Paul Cadmus. Though Cadmus had been working since the 1930’s and has work in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute and the Metropolitan Museum to name a few, he was pretty much completely ignored by the art establishment during his life. His career started with sudden national fame, or infamy rather, when his painting ‘The Fleet’s In’ was removed from a show at Washington’s Corcoran Art Gallery in 1934. Apparently an Admiral was offended at the paintings portrayal of sailors consorting with streetwalkers, though Cadmus clamed that he was merely portraying life as he observed it. The painting, though paid for by public funds, was removed and resigned to hang in Washington’s Alibi club. The deterioration from smoke and dust was ignored by the clubs exclusive membership until a private scholar’s campaign returned it to the Naval Historic Center many years later.
